Test Metrics

A software test metric is a standard means of measuring some attribute of the software development and testing process.

A number of test metrics can be produced, which include the following:

Ø      Estimating the testing effort required

Ø      Highlighting areas that may be error-prone

Ø      Measure and track the overall cost of testing

Ø      Measure the return on investment (ROI)

Ø      To predict when to stop testing

A number of metrics are typically used within the testing process.  These are outlined below:

               Ø      Size

Ø      Complexity

Ø      Cost/Effort

Ø      Defect found during testing

Ø      Test progress

It is important that the collection of testing metrics is an unobtrusive as possible. The following requirements must be considered in setting up a typical metrics program:

Ø      Definition of organisational objectives

Ø      Establish roles and responsibilities

Ø       Research and decide upon what metrics are to be recorded

Ø       What infrastructure is needed to be set up to record the metrics
