The Uckfield Martial Arts Club

I established the Uckfield Martial Arts Club in 1985, and is currently the longest running Martial Arts Club in Uckfield.

We primarily teach Ju-Jitsu, the oldest of the Japanese Martial Arts, both the traditional and Kumite (competition) forms.  Our club boasts a number of champion title holders over the past years.

Who was the Club Founder?

The UMAC club founder was as follows:

Sensei Anthony Cairns*            4th Dan Ju-Jitsu; 4th Dan Budo; 2nd Dan Karate (See Martial Arts CV for complete grade list)

Due to knee problems (probably caused by 40 years of Martial Arts training!!!) Sensei Anthony Cairns has retired from the world of Martial Arts and has passed the day-to-day control of the club over to the exceptionally worthy hands of Chief Instructor Sensei Alex Foot, who is also the longest serving member of the club, and the other instructors. His teaching methods continue in line with that of Sensei Anthony Cairns, being open, friendly, educational and above all, fun.

Who are the instructors?

There are always highly experienced and qualified instructors available, who are as follows:

Chief Instructor:

Sensei Alex Foot                       3rd Dan Ju-Jitsu, 1st Dan Kick Boxing

The History of Ju-Jitsu

The roots of Ju-Jitsu can be traced at least as far back as the fifteenth or sixteenth century in Japan.

Samurai warriors wore protective armour and they fought using weapons. There was little need for unarmed techniques unless the two warriors were so close together that swords or daggers could not be used or there was a need to capture rather than kill the enemy. Methods were devised which would exploit the joints in the armour to allow the opponent to be subdued.

The opportunities for armed warfare were restricted and armoured fighting became obsolete. The techniques developed earlier were changed to meet the new needs for dealing with unarmoured opponents.

As the restrictions continued more schools were opened which taught common people unarmed combat. Commoners were not allowed to carry weapons and so the techniques were refined still further. Refinements to techniques continue today with all martial arts. One of the most modern forms of Ju-Jitsu, Gracie Ju-Jitsu has been developed in Brazil. Gracie Ju-Jitsu concentrates on taking an opponent to the ground and has adapted many traditional Ju-Jitsu techniques to work on the floor where differences in size and weight can be minimised.

What is Ju-Jitsu?

Ju Jitsu means ‘the gentle art’.

Ju-jitsu is a full contact martial art and is not to everyone’s liking but those who stick it out learn tricks of agility and endurance that few realised they had before and when they first started to train with us.

Teaching starts with learning the basics of falling safely. It comes in very handy for falling in the club and if you fall over in the street.

The ethos behind ju-jitsu is using the power and weight of an aggressor against them. This can be a gentle manipulation or a full force blow or throw - whichever is most appropriate for the situation. Ju-jitsu does not rely on great body strength, instead our training teaches timing, flexibility, agility and knowledge of the body. Combine all of these techniques and you have the ability to control a confrontational situation as much to prevent injury to the person who may be attacking you as to protect yourself.
