The History of Ju-Jitsu The
roots of Ju-Jitsu can be traced at least as far back as the fifteenth or
sixteenth century in Japan. Samurai
warriors wore protective armour and they fought using weapons. There was little
need for unarmed techniques unless the two warriors were so close together that
swords or daggers could not be used or there was a need to capture rather than
kill the enemy. Methods were devised which would exploit the joints in the
armour to allow the opponent to be subdued. The
opportunities for armed warfare were restricted and armoured fighting became
obsolete. The techniques developed earlier were changed to meet the new needs
for dealing with unarmoured opponents. What is Ju-Jitsu? Ju
Jitsu means ‘the gentle art’. Ju-jitsu
is a full contact martial art and is not to everyone’s liking but those who
stick it out learn tricks of agility and endurance that few realised they had
before and when they first started to train with us. Teaching
starts with learning the basics of falling safely. It comes in very handy for
falling in the club and if you fall over in the street. The
ethos behind ju-jitsu is using the power and weight of an aggressor against
them. This can be a gentle manipulation or a full force blow or throw -
whichever is most appropriate for the situation. Ju-jitsu does not rely on great
body strength, instead our training teaches timing, flexibility, agility and
knowledge of the body. Combine all of these techniques and you have the ability
to control a confrontational situation as much to prevent injury to the person
who may be attacking you as to protect yourself.
